Will my dvd+r/rw ever be found in "my computer" again?

Just reinstalled xp. It's a toshiba samsung TS-H552U/BEBN. I've tried everything, delete upper/lower filters. they don't show. Went to samsung's website downloaded some firmware but it says drive cant be found. I put in a dvd and the light comes on like it's reading but i can't run any programs associated with the drive. I am baffled. any help? Tried windows updates? got em. Tried device manager? doesn't see it. Tried a reinstall? nothing. I have another dvd rom and it's doing the same on that so it's not just busted. I used this drive to Reinstall xp. This is craziness. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
